One of the coolest experiences I've ever had was watching the sun set from the top of Mauna Kea--a dormant shield volcano and the tallest peak in Hawaii. On the way up to the top we took a brief stop to acclimate at the visitor's center, where a short trail featuring rare botanical plants began. From a distance I could see the silver leaves of the endangered and endemic 'Ahinahina plant shine. I could've spent hours with these plants, but a sea of clouds and endless stars called out.
